Celebrating St Austell Brewery and Cornwall Golf

By @cornishgolfer

From giant topiary dogs and ducks to clubhouse loans, St Austell Brewery has long been part of Cornwall’s golf story.

It goes back a century or more. It was in May 1927 when the brewery loaned funds for Perranporth Golf Club’s new clubhouse. Decades later, their support helped add a new bar at West Cornwall Golf Club, Lelant.

A St Austell Brewery’s slogan — with a nod to Cornwall’s golfing exports.

And their slogan — “Brewed in Cornwall with a blend of American hops” — could just as easily describe Cornish golfers who made their mark in America: Jack Bennetts, Jim Barnes, Phil Rowe, Harry Hall.

In time, One and All of them have tended to hop back home.

I’ll drink to that.
